HSBC will double its 150-strong Hong Kong AI team and open an AI institute in 2027

HSBC will open a global AI research institute in Hong Kong in early 2027, focusing on AI application cases, post-quantum cryptography and blockchain technology, according to group CEO Georges Elhedery. David Liao, co-chief executive for Asia and the Middle East, told reporters that the Hong Kong team of 150 AI specialists will double over the next two to three years. He was responding to reports that the Hong Kong Monetary Authority had questioned why HSBC chose Singapore for a Global AI Centre of Excellence instead of the city. Liao's answer turned on decision rights rather than headcount. Hong Kong is the group's home ground, the place where senior executives sit and the central decision-making engine for Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, he said. The bank also runs AI teams in mainland China, London and other regions, but the leadership team overseeing regional AI applications works from Hong Kong.

What the Hong Kong team built

The 150-strong group has already delivered tools that help account managers engage with customers and improve the quality of case handling at HSBC's customer service centre. Liao did not detail the architecture or the models, but the scope points to two tracks: tools that support relationship conversations with customers, and tools that lift the quality of service work behind the scenes.

Why Hong Kong, and what doubles next

Liao cited Hong Kong's capital and wealth management markets, HSBC's customer base in the city and business growth as reasons the bank will deploy more technology and front-line staff there. The decision to double the AI team over two to three years implies that the first wave of tools proved their worth and that the pipeline of use cases is longer than 150 people can clear. Doubling also means the bank expects to hire, onboard and retain specialists in a market where every other financial institution is chasing the same profile. The institute launching in 2027 will work on post-quantum cryptography and blockchain alongside AI applications, which suggests HSBC is bundling its forward-looking technology bets in one place rather than scattering them across business units.

What this means for L&D and innovation leaders

HSBC's move shows that a global bank can run distributed AI teams and still centralise decision-making in one city. That matters if you are trying to scale capability without losing coherence. The doubling target also implies the first team delivered enough to justify the next 150. If your organisation is piloting AI tools in pockets, the HSBC example suggests you need a central team with budget authority and a pipeline of use cases that outlasts the pilot phase. The institute's mix of AI, cryptography and blockchain points to a second lesson: future-proofing requires people who can work across domains, not just prompt engineers or model fine-tuners. If you are building an AI capability programme, consider whether your curriculum prepares people to connect AI to adjacent technologies that will matter in three years, not just the large language model that landed last quarter.
